Somebody pinch me…I think I’m dreaming…
Did I really just go to Africa for a month?! I’m still in complete shock and somewhat numb to the fact that I just spent almost four amazing weeks in Gabon, Africa. Ever since I boarded the plane in Africa to return to the states I’ve been thinking, journaling, and praying about what I would tell my friends and family about my trip…and what the heck my first blog post would say! Do I keep it simple and short? Do I go straight into a deep, descriptive mode and tell it all? I sit here writing this…still not knowing what the best choice is. So I’m just going to freely write and we’ll see what happens…bare with me.
I’ve been back almost 3 days now and I’m completely overwhelmed by all the emotions I am feeling. So many people tried to prep me for the feelings I would have when I returned and I of course took everyone’s advice to heart…but the truth is that an experience like this is different for every one. God does work in our hearts in different ways. He speaks to me in a language only I can understand…it’s special…and it’s personal. Right now my emotions range from being completely sad that I’m back here in states and not in Gabon…to being extremely happy and excited for this new chapter in my life. Name an emotion and I’m probably feeling it right now…but I’m thankful for all these emotions, I would be worried if I wasn’t feeling them to be honest. Before my trip and throughout my entire time there I continually prayed that I would just have an open mind and an open heart…I prayed that God would teach me, change me, and help me to love all His children with everything I had to offer. And that is exactly what happened. Words can’t even begin to describe everything that went on in Gabon…my simple words wouldn’t do it justice. Which is why I am very excited to start blogging some photos…
My biggest struggle while being there was also one of my biggest blessings…
Language.
I did the best I could to learn the language while I was there. I learned to say basic things and carry a very simple and short conversation. They didn’t care if I pronounced things incorrectly, they were just excited to see me try. So many times I would be on the verge of tears from being so frustrated that I couldn’t communicate my true thoughts with someone. Or when I couldn’t understand what some of the kids from Hope House were trying to say to me. All I could do was try my best and pray that God would help me understand the people of Gabon. And then my whole perspective changed…God’s love is a language all on it’s own. It’s there if you want it and everyone has the ability to understand it. I was able to communicate my love for people without even saying a single word. I had a deeper connection with some people in Gabon without the exchange of one single word…whereas I’ve exchanged tons of words with some people throughout the years and never got to that deep level of connection. Without being able to understand someone’s words, you are forced to communicate through body language…observing the slightest motions made by a persons hands, their mouth, and especially their eyes.
I’ve never been told so many amazing stories just by looking into someone’s eyes…
